Entertainment Series A Highlight Of Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover

Photo: The HonkyTonk Knights Concerts, a movie and a dance performance are among the shoreside attractions at Fort Adams State Park during the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover. This afternoon at 2:40 p.m. EDT the lead boat, Dongfeng Race Team, was 725 nautical miles from Newport and leading Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing by 6 miles. The first five boats were all within 25 miles in terms of distance to the finish and the leader was predicted to finish Thursday. The Race Village opens to the public tomorrow at 3 p.m. and is followed an hour later with an opening ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m. that includes Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo, Sail Newport Executive Director Brad Read and others. The music series begins tomorrow after the opening ceremony with a "Dock Party" featuring Newport band Chelley, Bill & Dyl. The "Dock Party" shows will be on a stage on the North Lawn of Fort Adams State Park and admission is free. The first concert of the stopover planned inside the walls of Fort Adams is the Heineken Reggae Rally on Saturday, featuring The Ravers, Mighty Mystic and John Brown's Body. The doors open at 6 p.m. and tickets may be purchased through Newport Waterfront Events or Ticketmaster. Another concert in Fort Adams, the Magenta Music Night, takes place on Thursday, May 14, and features Sarah Potenza and Emma Joy Galvin (both of Rhode Island) and Anita Antoinette (of Boston). Potenza and Antoinette were finalists from NBC's "The Voice." Tickets also are available through Newport Waterfront Events and Ticketmaster. In addition to the music is a special night inside Fort Adams on Wednesday, May 13. The Island Moving Company will stage a dance performance and it will be followed by a screening from Newport FILM of the movie The Search for Freedom. Doors open at 7:00 and admission is free. All "Dock Party" concerts are free of charge. Other shows feature Honky Tonk Knights, The Hammond Boys with Dan Moretti, Tim Taylor Band and Comanchero.
