NEWPORT, RI (April 20, 2015) -Sail Newport announces that the Newport Restaurant Group, a collection of award-winning restaurants throughout Rhode Island, has been named a community partner of this year's Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover. The world's most grueling ocean race will make its only North American stopover in the Ocean State May 5-17. The Volvo Ocean Race is the world's premier offshore sailing race. The nine-month competition, which started in October of last year in Alicante, Spain, is an exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavor. A total of nine Legs, the race - for the first time ever - will include a stopover in Newport in the next few weeks. Leaving Newport, on May 17, the fleet will race across the Atlantic to Lisbon, Portugal and then to stops in France, the Hague and the finish in Sweden in June. Newport Restaurant Group will host international visitors and sailors at each of its Newport dining destinations within Newport Restaurant Group, including The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar, 22 Bowen's Wine Bar & Grille, The Lawn at Castle Hill, and the Smoke House. Many of the race festivities will extend beyond Newport to the group's other restaurants including Trio in Narragansett, the Boat House in Tiverton, and Hemenway's and Waterman Grille both located in Providence. Each destination will have viewing parties and special cocktails and dishes in celebration of the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover. "Newport Restaurant Group is thrilled to have such a prominent role in an event as monumental as the Volvo Ocean Race," said Newport Restaurant Group President Paul O'Reilly. "As a destination with strong maritime ties, we have always been a strong supporter of the sport and skill of sailing." The Race Village located at Sail Newport Sailing Center in historic Fort Adams State Park, will be open free to the public every day and will provide an up-close view of racing within yards of the shoreline. The family-oriented 12-day celebration will also offer a full schedule of entertainment, marine and ocean sustainability education exhibits, live music, school programs, a food court, team compounds, kids rides and games, Volvo trucks and cars, interactive pavilions, a Heineken Docks beer garden and free sailing opportunities for the public. Two concerts will also be held as well inside Fort Adams on May 9 and May 14. On Sunday, May 17, the outdoor Lawn at Castle Hill Inn will be open to the public and serve as a premier viewing point as the teams start out on Leg 7 of their journey to Portugal. Overlooking Narragansett Bay, The Lawn at Castle Hill Inn has a long history of spectatorship, having hosted onlookers of the America's Cup from 1930 to 1983, alongside other famed races, including the Newport Bermuda Race and the America's Cup trials held during the summer of 2012. Smoke House, on America's Cup Avenue, will be the official "Magenta Lounge" for the SCA Team of all women for two weeks beginning May 4 through May 17. Smoke House will be open to the public for those who want to partake in the festivities and cheer on the team. Other Newport Restaurant Group venues, The Mooring and 22 Bowen's, will host daily viewing parties and will offer special promotions, food, and drinks in support of the Volvo Ocean Race throughout the two-week span.
