On-Water Spectator Guidelines


Hello, and welcome to the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover! This page will provide you with a list of procedures and instructions that we ask you to follow to ensure your safety while providing you with the best opportunity to experience the Volvo Ocean 65s in all their glory. 

Race Dates:

• Thursday, May 17 VO65 Pro-Am 12:30h and 16:15 Starts

• Friday, May 18 M32 Pro-Am 13:15h and 17:15 Starts

• Saturday, May 19 VO65 In-Port Race 14:00h Start

• Sunday, May 20 VO65 Leg Start 14:00h Start

Emergencies: Hail U.S. Coast Guard on VHF 16

Race-related Information: Listen to VHF 88A

General Information:

• Race start times vary, refer to race sheets for each day

• The Racing Area Safety Zone will be enforced in the lower East Passage of Narragansett Bay starting one hour prior to racing

• During racing events recreational transit in the East Passage of Narragansett Bay will be available around the western (Conanicut Island) perimeter of the Racing Area with a 5mph speed limit being strictly enforced

• Please be familiar with NOAA Nautical Chart #13223 which includes the Racing Area

• Boats shall NOT enter the Racing Area at any time without permission

• Anchoring is NOT permitted

• Refusal to adhere to any request from Volvo Ocean Race Officials may result in action from USCG and/or local marine authorities


Note: Newport Harbor is a "no discharge zone" with a speed limit of 5mph (no wake)
