Get to know the Volunteer Chair, Lisa Charrier:

I moved to RI in the early 1990's from Scituate, Mass. I started volunteering with Sail Newport in 2014 on the Shipwreck Party and has been involved with Sail Newport ever since. I am the Club Manager of the IYAC in Newport and participates in Race Committee on Monday evenings.

Get to know Sail Newport’s Office Assistant, Hannah Lasorsa:

My name is pronounced Haw-nah. I started working full time Sail Newport in 2015, previously I was working away, right before the first Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover. I assisted the volunteer committee then by working with the Volunteer Matters program. Since then I have been responsible for recruiting on-shore volunteers for M32 World Match Racing Tour, Brooke Gonzalez Clinic, Opti New Englands and other Sail Newport regattas throughout the year.

Get to know the rest of the Newport Stopover Volunteer Committee Members:

Bill Heller: Hi, I am Bill Heller. Since retiring, I have been a volunteer for many Sail Newport events. You will see me everyday during the Volvo Ocean Race at the Volunteer Center, where I will be helping to coordinate the activities of our terrific volunteers. I look forward to meeting you and working with you.

Mary Smith: Hi, I’ll be one of your Volunteer Center Managers! I have been associated with Sail Newport (off & on) for more than 20 years, working in a variety of volunteer capacities. A former U.S. Navy JAG, & former board member of a wide array of charitable groups, I am a semi-professional organizer, so this job is a perfect fit!

Lauri Lyman: I have been a volunteer on and off with Sail Newport since it began. In fact I met my husband at the Sail Newport fundraiser in 1987. To see how it has grown from a single office to the building it is today is amazing and testament to the dedicated employees, volunteers and supporters. I am looking forward to meeting people from all over the world again during this stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race, in addition to promoting the sport of sailing and Newport.

Penel Murray: A Long time resident of Aquidneck Island Penel Murray has been actively involved in Sail Newport’s Volunteer opportunities. When not busy with my Real Estate practice I enjoy golf, cruising our local waters, and encouraging the next generation to enjoy the beauty of our oceans while taking some time to look after them. “The Volvo Ocean Race is not just a sports competition but has provided insights into the vast impact we have had on our oceans and have opened our eyes”.

Bondi Macomber: As a Newport resident since 1978, Bondi has a wealth of knowledge if you’re looking for some local intel. I have spent a few years in the 80’s sailing, studying abroad and working in New York before returning to Newport to raise a family. Never content to do one thing at a time I am currently wearing two hats as a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HS in Newport and as a Team Gear Consultant for Team One Newport’s embroidery department.

Jay Picotte: I’m a lifelong sailor and lover of boats with a background in the maritime non-profit world. I am currently a member of the Sail Newport Advisory Board as well as the Herreshoff Marine Museum/America's Cup Hall of Fame.
